Dr. Richard W. Kobetz
Founder and Chairman of the Board
Executive Protection Institute
Berryville, Virginia 22611

Dr. Richard Kobetz is a highly recognized Consultant and Trainer for major corporations and government agencies on matters of security, counter-terrorism and executive protection. He is a former Assistant Director of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) a former delegate to INTERPOL, and retired as a Commanding Officer with the Chicago Police Department and is currently a sworn Captain with the Gretna, Louisiana Police Department.  In 1978, he founded the Executive Protection Institute.

Dr. Kobetz is an accomplished author and lecturer and has served on committees and as an officer of ASIS International, the Academy of Security Educators and Trainers (ASET) and other professional organizations.  His publications include: Providing Executive Protection, Volumes I and II; Civil Disorder Mobilization Guidelines; Target Terrorism: Providing Protection Services; Crisis Intervention For Police and Campus Unrest: Dialogue or Destruction. Dr. Kobetz holds a MS degree from Illinois Institute of Technology, an MPA and DPA from Nova University. 

Dr. Kobetz is a Black Belt in martial arts, and is certified as an Advanced Driver Trainer. He is also certified as a firearms instructor and is a member of the International Association of Firearms Instructors.  His corporation provides a variety of security services for public and private clients.  Dr. Kobetz is the Executive Director of the Nine Lives Associates (NLA) an international fraternity of Personal Protection Specialists.  He is featured in both Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.  He is a member of the Academy of Security Educators and Trainers and serves as the Executive Director of the Academy.

Robert D. McCrie, PhD
Professor of Security Management
John Jay College of Criminal Justice

Robert D. McCrie is a very well known full-time security writer, educator, and consultant. In 1985, he founded the BS in Security Management major and has coordinated the MS in Protection Management degree at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Mr. McCrie also founded and edits the Security Journal and the Security Letter publication. He has written numerous books including “Security Operations Management”, Readings in Security Management: Principles and Practices, and the Security Letter Source Book. He received his MA, MS, MA, M.Phil and PhD.

Professor McCrie was recently cited as one of the “25 most Influential Security Executives” from Security Management magazine. He has received numerous awards and recognition such as the President’s Award of Merit, ASIS International, a medal from the Ministry of Public Security, People’s Republic of China, and is listed in several “Who’s Who” publications such as Who’s Who in America, in Finance and Industry, in US Writers, Editors, and Poets, and in Security. Professor McCrie is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP), is on the editorial advisory board for the Journal of Applied Security Research, and is a member of the Academy of Security Educators and Trainers (ASET).

Jerry Heying
President and CEO

Jerry Heying has over 33 years experience in private security is president and CEO of International Protection Group, LLC, a diversified security service and training firm founded in 1989 and headquartered in New York City, specializing in special event security and executive protection. Beginning in 1977, Mr. Heying managed the security departments of a high-rise building and entertainment facility that was active with international dignitaries and celebrities in midtown Manhattan. He has extensive experience in operational planning, organizing, and coordinating of major events and protective details both domestically and overseas. He has a full range of experience with protective details as team member, shift and detail leader, and performing advance preparation and organizing details for private families, entertainers, business and religious leaders on a world-wide basis and has performed protective operations in over 40 countries.
Mr. Heying obtained his Certified Protection Professional (CPP) from ASIS International and is a Certified Security Trainer (CST) from ASET.  He is an Evasive Driving Instructor, a certified law enforcement firearms instructor and currently licensed to carry concealed firearms in several states, and has attended numerous law enforcement and security training courses over the course of his career. Mr. Heying is a graduate of the Executive Protection Institute, a member of the Nine Lives Associates, and is President of the Academy of Security Educators and Trainers and is Co-Vice Chair of the Fire and Life Safety Council for ASIS International where he has been a member for 25 years.

Joseph Autera
President and CEO
Tony Scotti’s Vehicle Dynamics Institute

A former Non-Commissioned Officer in the US Army, Mr. Autera is widely recognized at Tony Scotti’s protégé. His  career in the private sector spans nearly fifteen years, during which time Mr. Autera has had the opportunity to plan, direct and participate in security operations focusing on detecting and interdicting a broad range of threats in moderate and high risk locales to include South and Central America, Europe, and both the Middle and Far East. Prior to founding VDI, he held positions as the Director of Security with a multi-national technology concern and Vice President of Global Security Services for one of the world’s leading providers of crisis management and risk mitigation services to multi-national corporations as well as non-governmental organizations.

Mr. Autera has authored articles on the subjects of driver training, threat recognition and surveillance detection which have been featured in some of the security industry’s most highly regarded publications including Security Management Magazine, the FBI National Academy Associate, Intersec and the Journal of Counterterrorism and Homeland Security. Additionally, he has been invited to speak on these topics at a number of respected venues, including the 2007 and 2009 Protective Security Conference, the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) 50th Annual Seminar and Exhibition, and the International Association of Counterterrorism and Security Professionals (IACSP) Terrorism Trends and Forecasts Symposium.

John F. Musser
Personal Protection Specialist

John Musser is an experienced professional with years of providing continuous service to a large variety of clients. He provides risk analysis, threat assessment, and protection for internationally known celebrities, business leaders, world-renowned statesmen, and financiers on a world-wide basis. Mr. Musser specializes in superbly detailed advances, and has performed countless domestic advances and hundreds of international advances. He routinely directs and manages security operations for events with participants numbering in the thousands. Mr. Musser is an accomplished martial artist, with more than 2 decades of practice in several different disciplines.
He is also a freelance consultant and instructor and has worked with several government agencies including Homeland Security. Mr. Musser’s background includes experience as a police officer and a defensive tactics instructor, he holds a San Dan Black Belt (third degree), an AA degree from Northern Virginia Community College, and he is a graduate of the Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Training Center and has attended numerous defensive driving and advanced firearms training programs. Mr. Musser is a graduate of the Executive Protection Institute, a member of the Nine Lives Associates, the Academy of Security Educators and Trainers and serves on the Board of Directors for the Academy. He is a recipient of the Katrina Meritorious Service Medal.

Honorable William F. Peeler
Owner
The Peeler Group

Bill Peeler is the Principle Owner of “The Peeler Group”, founded in 1995, and the School Director of “NEA Training Center, a state authorized security training school. Mr. Peeler is a security professional with over 22 years of experience in providing personal protection, facility protection, training and management, investigation and special event security and has operated in the United States, Canada, Middle East and Europe. He has provided lectures to both the private and public sectors regarding Emergency Planning and Response, Personal Protection, School Safety and other industry related subjects, and his writings have been published in the Journal of Counterterrorism and PI Magazine. Since 2005 he has served as a municipal Judge in New York State, overseeing both criminal and civil matters.
He worked for a fortune 500 company as the Regional Director of Training and Investigations and he worked in law enforcement that included the US Attorney General’s Office in Boston Massachusetts. Mr. Peeler is a graduated of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and the NYS Judicial Institute. He is a Charter Member of International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA), ASIS International, Overseas Advisory Council (OSAC), Peace Officer for Christ International (POCI) and is the New York State Director of the International Association of Counterterrorism & Security Professionals (IACSP). Mr. Peeler is a graduate of the Executive Protection Institute, a member of the Nine Lives Associates, and is a member of the Academy of Security Educators and Trainers.

Dr. Marie-Helen Maras
International editor
Journal of Applied Security Research

Is an international editor for the Journal of Applied Security Research. She is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Farmingdale State College (SUNY). She was awarded her PhD in Law from the Center for Criminology, University of Oxford, UK in 2008. She also has graduate degrees in Criminology and Criminal Justice (University of Ox-ford, UK) and Industrial and Organizational Psychology (University of New Haven) and undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Computer and Information Science (University of Maryland University College). Marie gained extensive law enforcement and security experience from her posts in the military as a Navy Law Enforcement Specialist and Command Investigator. Her main research interests are security, surveillance, terrorism and counter terrorism.

Howard Korn
Vice President of Operations
Executive Protection Management Services
Columbus, Ohio

Howard Korn is the Vice President of Operations for Executive Protection Management Services of Columbus Ohio. Mr. Korn directs and manages all aspects of security operations including risk and threat assessments for clients and their concerns, providing executive protection, and assists with many special events and festivals throughout the United States in large and small venues. Mr. Korn spent over 24 years as the Chief of Police at Marietta College and prior to his retirement in 2008, served as the President of the Ohio Campus Law Enforcement Association.
Over the years, he has assisted in such venues as International Olympics, Mardi Gras, NYC Marathon, Ohio Riverfront Roar Festival, and the Gretna Heritage Festival. Chief Korn also spent the last eight years with the college as their Director of Auxiliary and Conference services where he developed a full time conference center including catering and vending. Mr. Korn has conducted seminars, training programs and presentations throughout the United States and abroad in the areas of Security and Law Enforcement. Mr. Korn is a graduate of the Executive Protection Institute, a member of the Nine Lives Associates, and is a member of the Academy of Security Educators and Trainers.
